I have worked in the mental health field for several years and often felt like I had my share of training to prepare me for the billion situations I could find myself in. I recently made a career change and now in the business world as a physician recruiter (I know...quite a change). With that being said, I am having to learn everything that physicians go thru just to be able to practice. I already had much respect for docs a but now I am in truly amazed at the dedication and focus it takes just to have the privelage to help people. There are those out there that care nothing about helping people but it's easy to tell that Dr. U is not one of them. Interesting post!

I also used to have problems sleeping all through the night. I switched my workout to earlier in the morning and yoga in the evening before bed. This schedule change has my body done working on repairing itself in the early evening and the yoga to help get my mind to wind down. The changes it has made for my life and well being have been astronomical. I think the main issue here is to get enough sleep when you can, especially in today’s society, where it seems the term rest is for the wicked has become the mantra. I for one have always been a fan for the good old fashion nap.

Getting ready to bake some chocolate chip cookies using Sweet Perfection "sugar" and ChocoPerfection chips. As amazing as their candy bars taste, I am hoping my cookies will taste just like "normal" cookies do -- especially since this stuff is not cheap.

I have to agree with the good doctor that while we may be born with a genetic predisposition for ADHD, environment plays a significant role. We actually may be teaching our young brains to be ADHD.

However, just as one teaches the brain to be ADHD, one can train it to pay attention as well.

As a former elementary school principal, I had many kids on medication, but they still hadn't acquired skills like filtering out distractions, finishing tasks on-time, good use of working & short-term memory, etc. Those skills have to be learned and someone must teach them. I finally found a program called Play Attention (www.playattention.com) at the Florida Ed Tech conference. It combines attention training, cognitive skill training, memory training, and behavioral shaping into one program. I had great success with my kids using this.

It's difficult to find the answer for each individual child as they're all different. We can't delude ourselves into thinking that they'll get skills they don't have by osmosis or a pill. We've got to lead the way as parents and educators.

I agree ChocoPerfection Chocolate bars are really really good. When I bought the Sweet Perfection Sugar for baking, they also sent me samples of their ChocoPerfection Chocolate bars. Wow were they great tasting with no side effects. I also like thier sugar "Sweet Perfection" for baking.
